Hypothyroidism and Juicing
Juicing has been known to provide many different health benefits – increasing your energy, getting rid of excess weight, boosting your immune system, and improving your complexion, to say the least – but did you know that juicing for hypothyroidism can also help your thyroid return to a normal functioning state?
Under-activity of hormone production…
Since hypothyroidism is caused by the under-activity of hormone production in the thyroid gland, there are certain foods that you should avoid if you have been diagnosed with this disorder.
High goitrogen foods…
Foods that are high in goitrogens (which we will soon discuss) interfere with thyroid function and have a negative effect on hypothyroidism. If you know which foods to eat more of and which to avoid, you can be on your way to naturally treating this thyroid disorder without the need for excessive medication.
When juicing, you have the option of creating vegetable juice, fruit juice, or a combination of both. How do you know which is best for the thyroid, and how do you know what combination of fruits and vegetables to use?
The abundance of possibilities can be overwhelming.
Many common foods contain goitrogens, which interfere with the amount of iodine your body is able to store. Since the thyroid relies on iodine uptake in order to produce the proper amount of hormones, foods containing goitrogens interfere with this process and increase the symptoms of hypothyroidism.
If you have not been diagnosed with this disorder, there is no need to avoid these foods – the goitrogens themselves are not a cause of hypothyroidism. However, if you are experiencing any of the common symptoms of this disorder, it may be in your best interest to start eating less of these foods.
If you can’t bear to cut them out completely, cooking them reduces the amount of goitrogens – allowing you to eat goitrogenic foods in moderation without increasing the symptoms of hypothyroidism.
Foods to Avoid with Hypothyroidism : What foods contain goitrogens?
The biggest culprit is soy. This includes tofu, soybeans, and all products that contain derivatives of soy. Foods containing gluten – such as oats, rye, wheat, and barley – are also large sources of goitrogens.
Cruciferous Vegetables are the worst…
Many common cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, cauliflower, kale, mustard greens, Brussels sprouts, turnips, and collard greens all contain goitrogens, as do fruits such as strawberries, peaches, and pears. Peanuts, pine nuts, lima beans, and millet are also foods that you should avoid.
Which Foods Are Safe?
So, what does that leave you to eat? This list, though not all-encompassing, includes many other common foods that are exceptionally good to juice if you have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism.
- Dandelion Greens
Both vegetable juicing for hypothyroidism and fruit juicing for hypothyroidism can be beneficial, although it is typically better to create fresh juices that are mostly vegetables with a piece of fruit or two added in for sweetness.
Many fruits have high sugar content…
Since many fruits are high in sugars, following a strictly fruit juice regimen can lead to other health problems. There are many combinations of juices for thyroid health, but if you need some guidance the following recipe tastes great and promotes the well-being of your thyroid!
Love my Thyroid Juice
2 stalks of Celery
1 inch of Ginger
The combination of fruits and vegetables provides the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that your body needs to function properly, while ginger is a common home remedy for hypothyroidism due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Since all of these ingredients are low-goitrogenic foods, all are working for the thyroid rather than against it.
Be proactive: Become educated in your own health
Low thyroid treatment tends to consist of frequent trips to the doctor’s office and a plethora of prescription drugs or costly surgeries.
By knowing which foods to avoid and being able to change your diet with respect to those foods, you can begin to naturally cure your thyroid disorder and alleviate many of your symptoms.
Juicing for Hypothyroidism: A Natural Remedy for a Common Disorder
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could begin to heal your disorder from the comfort of your own home? While a thyroid problem will not disappear overnight, juicing for hypothyroidism can help cut down on the amount of medical costs while slowly returning your thyroid to a healthy, well-functioning state.
I became self educated and learned so much: I’m glad I did!
Personally, I have suffered from hypothyroidism for some time and I was absolutely convinced there had to be a better way for me than drugs and doctors, although I must say there were times when it would have been so much easier to simply take the medication! I read so many books and researched on the Internet, which as I am sure you know has extensive information but really how many hours do you want or need to spend looking for an answer……..
Living Well With Hypothyroidism is a book I found on Amazon which has changed my life. There was so much information which Mary shares which my doctor never even mentioned. I didn’t want drugs. I don’t like the scary possible side effects we don’t know about…
She shares a wealth of knowledge because she was a sufferer and I love that she shares her alternative and holistic therapies which make a difference, nutritional changes you must consider, and the necessary supplements that may help treat hypothyroidism.
The journey took time, I brought myself back to balance again
I was able to slowly bring myself back into balance and begin enjoying my life again. I had to give up some foods I really enjoyed ( quite a few) , I changed some / many aspects of my life which included saying no to some family / family / work demands which is never as easy as women!! I added in me time which has become sacred. We are conditioned to say yes and put ourselves last !
I learned so much about hypothyroidism that I didn’t know and I like how Mary presents it in an easy to read manner.
- Is it a quick fix? No.
- Does it take work, yes it does.
- Is it worth it? Oh yes, I can say that if you are serious about changing your life for the better as I did, then give her method a go.
- I am so happy I have energy, more than I have ever had, I used to feel so fatigued and woolly headed, I sleep so much better, my moods have improved, my children are happy because I am more stable emotionally 🙂 and husband too:), I have lost 15 pounds and I feel good.
You can buy her book on Amazon – at under $14, its been my best health investment.
Life is good.
