Juicing has been known to provide many different health benefits – increasing your energy, getting rid of excess weight, boosting your immune system, and improving your complexion, to say the least – but did you know that juicing for hypothyroidism can also help your thyroid return to a normal functioning state?


Under-activity of hormone production…

Since hypothyroidism is caused by the under-activity of hormone production in the thyroid gland, there are certain foods that you should avoid if you have been diagnosed with this disorder.

High goitrogen foods…

Foods that are high in goitrogens (which we will soon discuss) interfere with thyroid function and have a negative effect on hypothyroidism. If you know which foods to eat more of and which to avoid, you can be on your way to naturally treating this thyroid disorder without the need for excessive medication.

When juicing, you have the option of creating vegetable juice, fruit juice, or a combination of both. How do you know which is best for the thyroid, and how do you know what combination of fruits and vegetables to use?

The abundance of possibilities can be overwhelming.

Many common foods contain goitrogens, which interfere with the amount of iodine your body is able to store. Since the thyroid relies on iodine uptake in order to produce the proper amount of hormones, foods containing goitrogens interfere with this process and increase the symptoms of hypothyroidism.

If you have not been diagnosed with this disorder, there is no need to avoid these foods – the goitrogens themselves are not a cause of hypothyroidism. However, if you are experiencing any of the common symptoms of this disorder, it may be in your best interest to start eating less of these foods.

If you can’t bear to cut them out completely, cooking them reduces the amount of goitrogens – allowing you to eat goitrogenic foods in moderation without increasing the symptoms of hypothyroidism.

Foods to Avoid with Hypothyroidism : What foods contain goitrogens?

The biggest culprit is soy. This includes tofu, soybeans, and all products that contain derivatives of soy. Foods containing gluten – such as oats, rye, wheat, and barley – are also large sources of goitrogens.

Cruciferous Vegetables are the worst…

Many common cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, cauliflower, kale, mustard greens, Brussels sprouts, turnips, and collard greens all contain goitrogens, as do fruits such as strawberries, peaches, and pears. Peanuts, pine nuts, lima beans, and millet are also foods that you should avoid.

Which Foods Are Safe?

So, what does that leave you to eat? This list, though not all-encompassing, includes many other common foods that are exceptionally good to juice if you have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism.

  • Celery
  • Romaine
  • Zucchini
  • Cucumbers
  • Grapefruits
  • Lemons
  • Limes
  • Oranges
  • Watermelon
  • Apples
  • Parsley
  • Dandelion Greens
  • Carrots

Both vegetable juicing for hypothyroidism and fruit juicing for hypothyroidism can be beneficial, although it is typically better to create fresh juices that are mostly vegetables with a piece of fruit or two added in for sweetness.

Many fruits have high sugar content…

The combination of fruits and vegetables provides the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that your body needs to function properly, while ginger is a common home remedy for hypothyroidism due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Since all of these ingredients are low-goitrogenic foods, all are working for the thyroid rather than against it.
